It’s rather fitting that Albie Morkel’s first game since becoming the fourth player ever to play in 300 T20s is at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Friday evening.
For it was on the sprawling East Rand where it all began for the Titans’ veteran skipper.
And it hasn’t always been an easy road.
“I have fond memories of Willowmoore Park under Ray Jennings. It was a tough place to play cricket,” the 36-year-old all-rounder said ahead of the domestic T20 challenge meeting with the Dolphins.
“Some of the foundations that were laid there are things I still believe in now. We were drilled during training there. It’s a fine balance but I gained a lot out of it.”
However, as much as Morkel enjoys a mentoring role, his formative years in Benoni have made him realise that the current crop of rookies might have it a bit too easy.
“I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old man but things are gifted on a platter for some youngsters. I’m not saying treat them like troops. Just give them a harder environment to handle pressure better,” he said.
“Some rookies are rushed into the franchise system. I still see it happening regularly. I’m not saying one should overprotect them but they seem to crack quite easily when there’s just a bit of extra pressure – a false shot or a poor over or a run out. That’s mental steel. We don’t work enough on that.”
On a personal level, he’s very grateful for his unique achievement.
“I’ve been blessed with a long and successful domestic career,” said Morkel.
“I’ve enjoyed most days. There have been ups and downs as it always is. I definitely helped playing IPL for a long time. It got me to that number. I’m very grateful.”
While the overseas gigs have become a lesser for the well-travelled player, he hardly minds imparting his wisdom locally.
“It’s always nice playing in the local T20 tournament,” said Morkel.
“On my way home from last weekend’s game, I realised how special it still is to play here. People are still coming out to watch us play. We’re contributing to a good product.”
