Howells to end season with zest

Trainer Duncan Howells has had a remarkable year in KwaZulu-Natal and at the end of the month will officially be named champion trainer of the province for the 2013/2014 season.

He can end the season off with a final fling when he saddles Zestful in a MR 93 Handicap over 1600m at Scottsville today.

Zestful has been contesting races on the Greyville Polytrack over the past two months but will return to the course and distance of his last victory. In that event, run in February, the four-year-old son of Spectrum led all the way to beat King Jace in a MR 93 Handicap.

He followed up with a 1.30-length third behind Delaware Bay in a MR 96 Handicap over 1600m at Clairwood before running in the Grade 3 Kings Cup over the same course and distance. Considering it was a fairly strong field, Zestful did well to run fifth, beaten 3.60 lengths by Rio Carnival. With Tribal Dance, Grade 3 Cup Trial winner One Cool Dude and Gold Onyx the three horses to finish second, third and fourth respectively, it was a great effort.

He is nicely drawn at No 4 and will have the services of Muzi Yeni.

Stolen Destiny will be turning seven on 1 August but the Colin Scott-trained runner still enjoys his racing. He had to overcome the worst of draws last time when contesting the Listed Thukela Handicap over 1600m at Greyville.

He took on a strong field then which exacerbated the issue. Back in his class level the grey gelding should improve markedly. He has won two of his five races at the Scottsville track and will jump from barrier No 1.
