Blitzboks off to winning start in Hong Kong Sevens

The Blitzboks have had a tough time of it, failing to make an impression in recent tournaments in LA and Vancouver.

The Blitzboks got their latest World Rugby Sevens Series event off to the perfect start when they beat Ireland in their opening pool game in Hong Kong on Friday.

Sandile Ngcobo’s men have had a tough time of it on the circuit in recent weeks, failing to make any impression in Los Angeles and Vancouver to slip down to seventh in the points standings.

Good start in Hong Kong

Injuries to several key players have resulted in the Blitzboks having to rely on a number of rookies and this week again, three new players are in the squad in Hong Kong.

The Blitzboks though made a good start on Friday as they look to bounce back after their recent difficulties.

Ngcobo’s men won 14-7 in a tight game played in heavy rain, after being 7-7 at half time.

Mfundo Ndhlovu scored the SA Sevens team’s first try in the fourth minute while Ireland’s try came two minutes later by Matthew McDonald.

In the second half, Zain Davids scored the crucial winner with a minute remaining to give the Blitzboks a winning start at one of the world’s most iconic Sevens venues. Both tries were converted by Ricardo Duarttee.

Only strong defence by the South Africans in the final minutes prevented Ireland from scoring a second try.

On Saturday, the Blitzboks take on New Zealand (5.04am) and Kenya (9.25am) for a place in the Cup quarter-finals.
