Akpeyi and Chiefs set to begin contract talks

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is expected to start negotiations with Amakhosi over an extension to his contract but sources believe he could look to go elsewhere.

Akpeyi joined Chiefs last season on a 17-month contract and will be able to negotiate and sign a pre-contract elsewhere in January.

“His situation is a bit sticky because while he wants to stay at Chiefs and fight to be No 1, some are advising him that if he is to retain his position in the Nigerian national team, he needs to go where he can play regularly. Nigeria have a goalkeeping crisis of some sort and he is seen as the best candidate among the current crop. But if he is not playing regularly at club level, then it becomes a problem. But he is also looking at staying on as he feels comfortable in Naturena,” said a source.
