TBT: Jacob Mokhasi

In this week’s instalment of Throwback Thursday, we spoke to former Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United goalkeeper Jacob Mokhasi.

The 36-year-old takes us back when he travelled  with the SA Under-21 team to France years ago to participate in the Toulon Tournament.

Mokhasi remembers when the team lost 3-0 to China and Mashaba lashed out at the players in the dressing room straight after the game.

“We were in France coached by my father Shakes Mashaba and our goalkeeper coach was Sidwell Mahalamaimane at the time.

“The Chinese boys gave us a 3-0 beating and coach Shakes called a meeting right after the game. Bra Sidwell was the first to speak in the meeting and said ‘Bra Shakes we lost but I think these Chinese players were controlled by someone on their bench using a laptop’.

“There was in fact a guy with a laptop in their team sitting away from the bench and they kept listening to him before making moves and so on.”

“I think all he was doing was analysing the game. We didn’t know about these advancements and using technology. Bra Sidwell went on to say that he heard some of the Chinese players speaking IsiZulu on the touchline during the game. And that they knew what we had planned for the game.

“We all laughed and it made the situation better, Bra Sidwell was the star in that moment.”
