Banyana coach calls for more friendlies against top teams

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis believes the only way the senior national team can improve is by playing against top nations on a regular basis.

The Banyana coach was satisfied with the team’s showing at the Cyprus Women’s Cup where they finished sixth out of 12 teams after finishing the group stages on second place with two draws and one before losing the fifth place playoff match 2-1 to Belgium.

“If we want to compete with the best countries in the world then we are going to have to play on a consistent basis against top brand teams because that is only way we can test ourselves,” Ellis told Safa.net.

“Some of our players played against such oppositions for the first time and they raised their hands. Each and every game became difficult for us to choose a starting XI, but it showed that given an opportunity we can rise to the occasion.”
