Benni McCarthy for Bafana post?

Of late, Benni McCarthy has been tipped to be Stuart Baxter's successor at Bafana Bafana, whenever he vacates the national hot seat, some pundits have suggested.

The rationale behind the Cape Town City coach’s name being bandied about is that, one, he is South African and therefore understands the football culture much better. Two, he is a Bafana legend, and three, he has already enjoyed success in the Premier Soccer League with City.

His boss, John Comitis, is not bothered by the talks around his coach being poached by Safa, insisting that if McCarthy wants to go to Bafana, he will give him his blessing.

“I have learnt in football that you cannot control external environments, you have to control your own environment and you do what you can do with your own club. When things happen around you then you must redirect, re-access and then you move forward,” Comitis told Phakaaathi.

“If it is an honour for him to go to the Bafana team and he feels it is the right time for him, then we will support him and move on to find another coach. But I am quite confident he is happy where he is and we are looking forward to seeing him today because all the coaches are returning to do their planning and the rest of the squad arrives on Friday,” he added.

Last season McCarthy bagged City their second trophy in the club’s three-year existence and Comitis is extremely pleased with the progress in the dugout.

“It was a good season for us and he has come a long way. He has got a good grip on how everything works now. The first year was a learning curve for himand I am happy with the progress,” said Comitis, who said his club might not be too aggressive in the transfer window.

“Ronald Putsche and Thabo Nodada have come back and it has refreshed the squad. I think we are going to have a great season.”
