Benni wants to win Cape derby for Comitis

Benni McCarthy says he will not be able to look Cape Town City chairman John Comitis in the eye if he cannot pick up a victory over Ajax in Saturday's Absa Premiership Mother City derby.

Comitis and McCarthy have a long history that saw the former give the Hanover Park-born star his first chance in top flight football at Cape Town Spurs.

Spurs merged with Seven Stars in 1999 to form Ajax Cape Town, where Comitis was CEO and then honorary life chairman before he sold his shares after a reported row with fellow shareholders the Efstathiou brothers, who currently run Ajax.

Comitis, of course, formed Cape Town City ahead of the start of the 2015/16 Premier Soccer League season, after buying the MP Black Aces franchise. And this campaign, he was reunited with McCarthy, appointing him as head coach at City.

“Having grown up in front of John Comitis, there is no way I can face him on Saturday without the three points,” McCarthy told reporters at a press conference in Cape Town on Wednesday.

City will certainly be favourites to win the derby, after an excellent start to the season under McCarthy that has seen them win three of five league matches and reach the MTN8 final, where they will take on SuperSport United.

McCarthy’s side recovered from losses to Chiefs and Pirates to beat Polokwane City in their last league match.

Ajax also beat Polokwane City at home, but have not won another league game all season.

McCarthy, meanwhile, has been outspoken about the refereeing in the PSL, which has come under heavy criticism this campaign, a series of horrendous errors blighting the on-field action.
