Cameroon storm back to top Group A

Michael Ngadeu’s late goal sent Cameroon to the top of Group A on Wednesday, as they sealed a 2-1 2017 Africa Cup of Nations win over plucky Guinea-Bissau.

Ngadeu’s low shot beat Jonas in the 79th minute, to put Cameroon two points clear at the top of the group, ahead of Burkina Faso and Gabon.

The Wild Dogs could consider themselves a little unlucky, and certainly scored the goal of the game, through winger Piqueti.

Baciro Cande’s side stunned Cameroon in the 13th minute, Piqueti weaving past a series of statuesque Cameroon defenders before firing a brilliant finish into the top corner.

Cameroon’s first strike at goal came in the 27th minute as Collins Fai crossed from the right, Benjamin Moukandjo flicked on and Clinton Njie volleyed, but it was straight at Jonas in the Guinea-Bissau goal.

Benjamin Moukandjo had scored Cameroon’s only goal in a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso on Saturday and he tested Jonas with a shot from the edge of the area four minutes before the break, but the Wild Dogs ‘keeper was equal to it.

A minute later, striker Vincent Aboubakar, recalled to the Cameroon line-up for this game after missing the Burkina Faso match, should really have leveled matters but totally scuffed his shot from the centre of the penalty area.

Cameroon coach Hugo Broos made a change at the break, with Karl Ekambi coming on for Clinton Njie.

Equatorial Guinea came about as close as you get to doubling their lead in the 54th minute, as Frederic Mendy raced clear and lifted the ball over Joseph Ondoa in the Cameroon goal, but Ngadeu just cleared off the line in time.

It was Cameroon who drew level in the 62nd minute, as Siani smashed home a fine finish from the edge of the area. And Ngadeu finally provided a win in this group with 11 minutes left, beating Jonas from just inside the area.
