Covid-19 has dealt Ajax a heavy hand

The deadly disease has spread quite sporadically, with the number of infections now nearing 20,000.

The outbreak has paused the country’s economic activity and every other activity, including our beloved game of football. It has been a hard two months without any action, and it hurts.

But I believe it hurts more for the players and clubs who eke out their living through the game. By this time – had things been normal – the Urban Warriors would have been crowned GladAfrica Championship winners and made their return to the Absa Premiership.

I know, you will think I am making a bold prediction because when the Championship was paused there were still a handful of games left. But with a clean seven points lead with six games to go and their chasers, Swallows FC, Uthongathi FC and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila’s form suspect at the time of the cancellation, one can predict that they would have cruised to the finish line uninterrupted.

But again, this is football we are talking about and stranger things have happened on the pitch. Talking of stranger things, Monday marked a year since TS Galaxy did the unthinkable and upset Kaizer Chiefs, beating them 1-0 to win the Nedbank Cup. Yes, you guessed right, I couldn’t miss the chance to take that jibe at Amakhosi fans.

Anyway, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel regarding the resumption of games, but one hopes the light is not that of an oncoming train.
