Goal fest expected as Sundowns meet Maritzburg

If the last two rounds of the Absa Premiership are anything to go by, we could be in for a feast of goals at Loftus Versfeld tonight when Mamelodi Sundowns welcome Maritzburg United.

Table-topping Masandawana have scored five goals in their last two games while the Team of Choice have gone two better than Pitso Mosimane’s side with seven strikes.

Sundowns are top of the table but their home form remains a concern, as they have dropped nine points so far. The Brazilians did, however, hammer Baroka FC 4-0 in Pretoria in their last home game and will be hoping that was the turning point.

“It is going to be a difficult match, they love playing against us. If we score first, we should be okay,” said Mosimane, who suggested it was difficult for Sundowns to score against some teams because they play too defensively.

“If you want goals you need to attack, but teams don’t attack and then there are no goals. Then people say it is the strikers. But we are playing against an attacking team,” said Mosimane.

Sundowns sit two points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, with three games in hand. The two-time league-winning coach has cautioned his players against complacency.

“I expect consistency and a level of professionalism in terms of them being able to adjust to the conditions like we did with Golden Arrows. Normally we are able to play football the way supporters are supposed to see it,” he said.

Other issues hampering Sundowns are players stalling on signing new contracts to extend their stay at Chloorkop. However, Mosimane seems confident that key players like Themba Zwane and Tiyani Mabunda will soon put pen to paper.

“Where are they going to play football like this? And at Sundowns, is it a question of money? So where are they going? If Themba goes, where is he going to? If he is going overseas, then okay. The money maybe is not the same and the quality of football, but if he stays in South Africa then why must he move? Where is he going?” questioned Mosimane.
