Hunt shows frustration as Wits blow it again

Gavin Hunt bemoaned Bidvest Wits' "crazy" inability to take their chances in front of goal as the Clever Boys remained bottom of the Absa Premiership after a 0-0 draw at home to Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday night.

Wits won the Telkom Knockout last weekend, but their defence of their Absa Premiership title remains shambolic – Hunt’s side have won two of 12 league games all season and have scored just twice in their last eight Premiership matches.

Hunt had particular cause for grievance at a staggering miss by Amr Gamal, who somehow contrived to turn the ball wide in the second half after Reeve Frosler’s cross found him facing an open goal.

“You can’t miss chances like the ones we’ve missed,” Hunt told SuperSport TV afterwards.

“We have scored one goal in five league games, forget about the cup, it is crazy, you can’t miss goalline tap-ins like that. We pressed them in … I was always scared of being caught on a breakaway. It was a difficult pitch to play on, but we should have been better … this is the problem of the season, if we had scored our chances we would be right up the table, but anyway, we have to keep battling.”

In this congested season, Wits actually moved a point closer to the top of the table with this draw with Ajax Cape Town, who also sit on 10 points, nine behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, Chippa United, Orlando Pirates and Baroka FC.

Wits’ next game is a trip tomorrow to play Polokwane City, who suffered a disappointing loss at home to Platinum Stars on Wednesday. City find themselves 14th in the table, just a point clear of Ajax and Wits.

Ajax coach Stanley Menzo, meanwhile, seemed delighted with a point at Wits.

“I am very happy for the team, it was a great performance against the champions of last year,” Menzo told SuperSport TV.
