Komphela encourages SA footballers to play in Europe

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela says he would like to see South African players stay longer in Europe.

Komphela says players returning to the Absa Premiership after failed stints in Europe are not benefiting the national team or the domestic league.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach’s comments come after the Under-20 national team, Amajita, qualified for the Under-20 World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the Under-20 Afcon in Niger.

Komphela is happy with South African national junior teams qualifying for continental and global tournaments, but he says he would still like to see more South African players plying their trade overseas to help Bafana Bafana compete.

The exploits of the junior national team has not translated to the success of Bafana Bafana, and Komphela believes South Africa need more players in top league overseas.

“It’s good for our player to go overseas, but my wish is to see more of our players playing for big and respected teams,” Komphela was quoted by Isolezwe. “This will help national team with having a lot of players with experience.”
