League winners will need 60 points – Tembo

By Ntokozo Gumede

The 60-point mark is the same tally that it took defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to win last season’s crown and for Tembo, seeing only seven points separating seventh placed Kaizer Chiefs from Masandawana speaks of the “competitiveness” of the league.

“For me this has been a good season because I think when a team wins the league by 71 points, it says a lot about the league. I think when we look at the table, the team that is going to win the league is going to have 60 points and for me that shows how competitive the league is. Look at the point gap from the top until at least number seven, it is not that much,” said Tembo.

Tembo insists that defending champions and crosstown rivals, Sundowns, have the upper hand to retain the championship even though they are in the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League.

“For a team like Sundowns I don’t think it has been a huge distraction, they have been doing it for the past five years. It is normal now but the only problem is when you compete this year and you go another five years and it becomes a problem because you need to adjust and re-adapt in terms of your squad, but Sundowns know the tertian. Last season they won the league but they were still playing in Africa.”
