Malema condemns fan violence

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has condemned the violent scenes that marred the Mamelodi Sundowns versus Orlando Pirates clash at Loftus Stadium on Saturday.

The match had to be suspended for almost an hour after Percy Tau’s 82nd minute sixth goal sparked a pitch invasion by the Pirates fans.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Malema called on the Pirates fan to respect the club.

“We don’t agree with violence. Even this thing of Pirates was not correct. Pirates is a big club and must be respected‚” said Malema, who is also a supporter of Pirates.

Malema becomes the latest politician to condemn Saturday’s violence after former reserve bank governor Tito Mboweni who called for a two-season ban for Pirates.

“Why complicate matters folks. Simple. Orlando Pirates must be banned from the PSL for two seasons. Period. There has to be a consequence,” said Mboweni.

Malema responded: “Order my governor, with due respect I submit.”
