Mthethwa wasted no time and has already made his debut for the team. His appearance as a second-half substitute at Moses Mabhida Stadium was met with thunderous applause from the fans.

He came on for Edson Castillo in the 64th minute of Chiefs’ 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United in Durban on Wednesday evening.

Mthethwa has quickly become a favourite among the Chiefs supporters who had been eagerly advocating for his signing since May last year.

The talented midfielder, originally from KwaZulu-Natal, had an outstanding season with Stellenbosch FC.

They eventually agreed to release him to Chiefs just one day before the transfer window closed.

“I feel honoured to be a part of this family – it is a big family. And it is not just any family, but a family with history. I am so happy to be here,” said Mthethwa in a video released by the club on Friday.

Addressing his teammates, Mthethwa reverted to isiZulu and said, “I am thankful to be a part of you guys. I hope we will pull together as men, and respect each other as necessary.”

Mthethwa’s pledge to Chiefs supporters

To the supporters, he promised that he will continue working hard to ensure that the team reaps the rewards of signing him.

“The only thing I can promise is that I will be the Ox that everyone knows. I will keep pushing and I will do everything in order for them to be happy.”

A firm supporter of Maskandi artist Khuzani, Mthethwa said, “My favourite music, as you know I am from rural KZN, it has to be Maskandi – I am a rural boy.”
