'Not every team can say they have won a trophy this season. Our fans should take pride in that and enjoy it,' said the Chiefs head coach.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has indicated that he is going to stay at Amakhosi next season.

There has been speculation around Nabi’s position at the helm of Amakhosi. And that is only likely to intensify after Chiefs’ goalless draw with Polokwane City on Saturday.

Chiefs’ nine in a row

The draw was Chiefs’ ninth consecutive Premiership match without a win. It meant they missed out on a place in the MTN8 for the second season in a row.

Nabi, however, did win the Nedbank Cup with Chiefs in his first season at the helm. That ended a decade where Amakhosi had not lifted a single piece of official Premier Soccer League silverware.

That could well be his saving grace, as well as the club having faith that his talk of a ‘process’ will bear fruit in the Premiership next season.

“We had a conversation with the Chairman (Kaizer Motaung) and management. We have a clear idea of what needs to be done,” Nabi told the media after Saturday’s game at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

“In terms of players, I won’t say how many or which players we need but the recruitment department is working very hard.

“Some contact with targets has started already and we are sure the team will be strengthened for next season.”

Nabi insisted that Chiefs’ poor finish in the league should not take away from the fact they won the Nedbank Cup. Chiefs beat the Premiership’s top three, Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, en route to the title.

‘A clear path’

“We knew that this season was going to be tough given the process we are engaged with as a club. But after doing everything this season, now there is a clear path to know what we need to do and what decisions we need to take in order to improve next season,” added Nabi.

“Not finishing in the top eight is a disappointment, although it doesn’t undermine the effort the players have put in and what we have achieved, which is to win the Nedbank Cup. Not every team can say they have won a trophy this season. Our fans should take pride in that and enjoy it.”
