Mosimane praises Sundowns players

Pitso Mosimane praised the efforts of his side after they qualified for the 2018 Caf Champions League on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at relegated Highlands Park.

A point was enough for the Brazilians as Cape Town City squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 at Polokwane City. Eric Tinkler’s side will play in the Caf Confederation Cup next year.

Sundowns did not win any domestic silverware this season, beaten by Bidvest Wits in the race for the Absa Premiership title, and by the same side in the MTN8 final, but they did win the Caf Champions League last year, and in February they beat TP Mazembe to lift the Caf Super Cup

“2016 and 2017 have been fantastic for us, we won the grand slam,” said Mosimane, whose side also won last season’s Premiership title.

“They’ve (the players) put their bodies on the line, they did everything to try and win.

“We won the Champions League and the Super Cup. Okay, we lost to Bidvest Wits in the final of the MTN8 and we lost the title to Wits, we have tried, we never let it go,” said Mosimane.

“Nobody has run a race like this. For us to be in the Fifa Club World Cup and to be games behind … that has been the problem. For the boys to come back and finish second is remarkable.”

Cape Town City, meanwhile, can reflect on an excellent third-placed finish in their first season since John Comitis bought the MP Black Aces franchise and move the club to the Mother City.

City captain Lebogang Manyama was confirmed as the winner of the Premiership’s Golden Boot, his 13 goals this season leaving him one ahead of Orlando Pirates striker Tendai Ndoro.
