Safa to honour Clive Barker

By Phakaaathi Reporter

The 75-year-old soccer coach guided Bafana Bafana to the African nations Cup victory in 1996 in South Africa and qualified for the Fifa World Cup in 1998.

Barker is the most successful Bafana coach and currently runs a football academy.

The former Santos coach will be celebrated in KZN next month with a Gala Dinner where a jersey belonging to Mark Fish will be auctioned and players from the Afcon winning 1996 squad will be the guests of honour.

An honorary football match will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium next month during the Fifa break to celebrate Barker. An African XI team will square off against the Class of ‘96 team.

“It is their (Safa) decision. But if they want to honour me, I’ll be delighted. If they don’t, I’ll still be okay,” said Barker.

“I’m not feeling bad. I don’t feel bad about anything in football.”
