Four armed robberies took place on January 28.

The first robbery took place in Watt Road, New Era when a security guard was on duty at 3am.

He saw an oncoming truck at the gate and noticed three men in it.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, says the men got out of the truck and opened the door of the guard hut, in which the guard was.

“One pointed a gun at him while the other two grabbed him and pulled him into the back yard where they tied his hands and feet with wire,” says Cpt Ramphora.

The men threw a blanket over the victim’s head and then tried to gain entry to the building by kicking down a door.

The victim managed to untie himself and started screaming.

“That surely scared the robbers and they ran away. But they robbed the victim of his cell phone,” says Cpt Ramphora.

No shots were fired.

* The second robbery took place in Strubenvale.

A man went to a nearby ATM at 1.25pm, to draw money before he went back to his house to fetch his lunch box.

“As he got back into his car which was parked in Hansom Road, three men approached him,” says Ramphora.

One robber dragged him out of the car, assaulted him and threw his car keys in the garden.

Another robber took the victim’s wallet containing the cash, his ID and bank cards.

Throughout the ordeal the third robber pointed a knife against the victim’s chest.

The robbers ran away.

Ramphora says the victim claims he was followed after he went to the ATM.

* During the next robbery a man was walking down Plantation Road, Springs Extension at 3.30pm when two men approached him.

Cpt Ramphora says one had a knife and the other ordered him to hand over his laptop.

He adds the victim gave it to them and they ran away with it.

No-one was injured.

* At the fourth incident two bicycles were stolen.

Ramphora says two people were cycling in Enstra Road, Petersfield at 5.10pm.

One man armed with a firearm and the other with a knife, stopped them and demanded their bicycles.

“The woman refused to hand over her bicycle and rode away, but one robber chased and caught up with her,” says Ramphora

He then stabbed her on her arm. The robbers took the bicycles and rode off.

Community members came to the woman’s rescue.

No shots were fired.
