16-year-old girl arrested for human trafficking

SASOLBURG.- A 16-year-old girl has been arrested following her alleged involvement in the kidnapping of two other 15-year-old girls.

The three teenage girls, who are scholars at the Mafube Intermediate School, were reported missing in Phuthaditjhaba last week. The girls were found outside a tavern in Sasolburg on Wednesday. According to police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele preliminary investigations revealed that the girls were lured from their homes and used for prostitution by unknown foreign nationals. Makhele says the three girls were last seen on 20 November. He adds that their school informs were found inside a dustbin outside one of the girls’ family home, which then prompted the investigation into their disappearance. Two of the girls were later found outside a tavern in Sasolburg. He further adds that these girls were then reunited with their families by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). According to Makhele the teenagers were to be moved to another area to work as prostitutes. “Further investigations led officers to the same area in Zamdela where the third girl, aged 16, was found and arrested after it emerged that she allegedly solicited the kidnapping of the other two girls. She will appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate court on Monday, December 7 on a charge of human trafficking.” “Police are pleading to anyone who might have information to contact Lieutenant Colonel Lekhaoli Thito on 082 414 9736 or Capt Thabiso Moholo on 083 750 5366 Investigation continues to try and trace the kidnappers,” Makhele said.
