Unpaid staff holds ELM customers and colleagues hostage

Vanderbijlpark.- Fuming security guards stormed into the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) building on Monday morning and held workers and customers captive, demanding they be paid.

The incident happened just after 09:00. Security guards were protesting over unpaid salaries. Speaking to Vaalweekblad Matshepo Maina of Vanderbijlpark said she went into the municipality building and everything was orderly as she was done with her business for the day the security guards locked the gates to and from the building. “Security personnel were frustrated that its heading to Christmas and their salaries which were due by the 15th were still not paid.” Maina said it took her 30 minutes to get out of the municipality after pleading with a security guard. “I told them that I understand their frustrations but I was a mere customer. One agreed that I need not to be there and allowed me out of the premises leaving other customers inside.” According to the security guards the municipality hasn’t paid their salaries for 3 months. More information will follow as the story unfolds.
