Opposition party expresses concern about water leaks
SEDIBENG.- The Democratic Alliance (DA) has said that it is shocked by the hundreds of thousands of rands lost monthly due to burst pipes in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM).
The opposition party’s regional Chairman in the Vaal area, Dennis Ryder, said that he believes all mechanisms to sort out the problem with the municipality have already been exhausted and says he will now send a letter to the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, in which he requests his intervention.
According to Ryder, the municipality is struggling to repair water leaks as there is no diesel to fill repair trucks with and there is also no equipment to repair leaks.
“The municipality has been characterized for years by its basic inability to plan and budget.
“The municipality is currently under administration, which means that the provincial government must help address the shortcomings.
“Unfortunately, the provincial government has been absent from the outset when it comes to these issues,” Ryder said.
“While the provincial government has recently made a visible difference in terms of repairs to provincial roads, they should at least have done more over the past few years to assist Gauteng’s stepchild municipality,” he said.
According to Ryder, it would appear that there is no progress in getting the struggling municipality right or in providing basic service delivery.
Ryder believes it is simply not good enough to use the excuse that there is no diesel.
“The mayor and speaker have fuel for their extravagant vehicles funded by the municipality,” said Ryder.
