A burst sewage pipe has left Marilina Prinsloo’s house ‘drowning’ in waste. She said she has complained to the municipality, but her problem falls on deaf ears.
VANDERBIJLPARK. – The past few weeks have proven to be nothing short of a nightmare for Marilina Prinsloo. This is a result of a ruptured local sewage pipe that has filled her entire house and garden with raw sewage.
“I don’t have a manhole in my yard and I am paying the price,” said Marilina.
“About three weeks ago I arrived home and was welcomed by sewage at my doorstep and on the pavement. The sewage engulfed the house. It was even flowing out of the drainpipe of my kitchen sink. After several calls that included the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), I was told that the main sewage pipe had collapsed in Delfos Boulevard. I have been fighting this battle for three weeks. The sewage was coming out of the bath and shower and streaming out of the toilet.”
As a result of the sewage deluge, Prinsloo’s bathroom cabinets have been damaged.
“The backyard is full of sanitary nappies, toilet paper and human waste.” Prinsloo said she approached Ward Councillor Pieter Verbeek Beukes.
“Cllr Beukes explained to me that he followed all the necessary processes but did not have a mandate to instruct the municipality on what to do.”
“I have taken the fight to the office of the Municipal Council Speaker, Premier and State President to engage them. I was told that K. Zimu has been tasked by the province as a special advisor for basic services. He needs to assist in that regard, which includes sewage pipes. Ever since the ELM has been placed under partial administration, the province has taken the role in the finance, basic services and the supply chain management, but nothing has changed for the better,” Beukes said.
