Lions Club sets up veggie garden behind River Square

On September 11, 2021, the Lions Club of Vereeniging planted the first seedlings for its brand-new community vegetable garden.

VEREENIGING. – On September 11, 2021, the Lions Club of Vereeniging planted the first seedlings for its brand-new community vegetable garden.

This vibrant food garden is situated behind the River Square Shopping Centre in Three Rivers.

For the past two weekends members of the Lions Club of Vereeniging were seen digging, planting seeds and watering.

Additionally, members of the community helped out by donating gardening equipment and seedlings.

The Lions Club also had helpful assistance from the Rotary Club in Vanderbijlpark, who has been running an established and successful vegetable garden in Vanderbijlpark for a considerable amount of time.

Rita Benecke from the Rotary Club of Vanderbijlpark visited the Lions Club of Vereeniging’s veggie garden and offered her advice.

Efforts are being made to give back to the community by using produce from this garden to feed those in need.
Suzanne Murray, a member of the Lions Club of Vereeniging, says the biggest cost will be setting up the irrigation system.

Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, there have not been many fundraising activities for the Lions Club, however, on Saturday 11 September, they conducted their first book sale in quite some time. Members of the community who would like to help out can contact Murray on 082 780 6177.
