Runners raise awareness about childhood cancer
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) approximately 400 000 children and adolescents between the ages of 0-19 are diagnosed with cancer each year, with leukemias, brain cancers, lymphomas and solid tumours such as neuroblastoma and Wilms tumours being the most prevalent among children.
VEREENIGING. – The month of September was International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
To help spread awareness about childhood cancer Rainbows and Smiles, a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to childhood cancer awareness, asked loyal supporters to walk or run in support of childhood cancer fighters.
This cause was well supported in Vereeniging where participants accepted the challenge to run either 5km (or 5000 steps) or a 10km (or 10 000 steps per day during the month of September.
Each run was dedicated to specific child fighting against cancer.
To end off International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month a group of runners got together at Rose Girlz on Wednesday 29 September 2021 to run for Mia Olivier (9) who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia pre B on the 25th of January 2019 and is undergoing treatment.
