ELM security guards arrested for theft of copper while on duty

VEREENIGING.- A tip-off has led to the arrest of three security guards in possession of a copper cable with an estimation of R50 million on Monday.

The suspects were caught red handed while on duty at the Duncanville, Vereenigigng Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) electrical depot at around 04:30 in the morning.
This comes after the guards who were working on night shift at the time, allegedly stripped off the electric cables from transformers in the depot. It is said that some of the transformers were there to be repaired while others were ready to be distributed to the affected areas such as Sebokeng, Bedworthpark, Steel Park, Bophelong Extension and Mkhelele to name but few areas. It is also said that the tip-off was made by one of a senior worker at the depot as he had apparently been monitoring the security guards’ modus operandi.
At that fateful morning the guards are said to have already filled up their bags and loaded them on their transport, ready to drive off.
They were stopped by the ELM investigators. Vereeniging Police Spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda confirmed that three suspects have been arrested and handed to the police.The fourth suspected managed to escape before the officials arrived.
