The owners, the Van der Merwe family, have every reason to be proud. The Liquid Lounge was the first restaurant boat (of its size) to grace the Vaal River.
It all started in 2002 when Charissa went to visit family in Australia and experienced a floating restaurant cruise on the Brisbane River.
Charissa’s dad had built river barges before and suggested a big restaurant boat on the Vaal River, as the navigable waters are perfect for this kind of boat.
“When the decision was made to start the build, the pontoons we looked at in Bloemfontein ended up in the Vaal,” says Charissa.

They started building the Liquid Lounge in 2002 and she was launched in September 2003. “While we were building, we discovered both main hotels along the river were looking for this type of boat to service their guests. Before she was launched, we managed to secure contracts at both Emerald resort & Casino and Riverside Sun,” says Charissa.
“Everything just seemed to fall into place, like it was meant to be. “We feel blessed, we work very hard but are thankful to God every day.”
The staff are dedicated, friendly and professional. And keeping the “lady” well maintained, implementing changes to furnishings so she looks new all the time has played a big role in their success.
Another highlight is the fact that they are owner run, thus clients are dealing with the owners and not just managers. The food is also super tasty! Homemade and prepared with love using family recipes.
“We use fresh ingredients (nothing boxed or powdered) and you can taste the difference,” says Charissa.
