Hundreds brave the cold for children with disabilities
More than 132 people and one horse braved cold and windy conditions on Saturday (22 July 2023) to participate in the Känguru Fun Run/Walk in recognition of Mandela Day for the Känguru Institute for the Disabled.
KLIPRIVIER. – According to Adele Modoo, manager of the Känguru Institute for the Disabled, the run is held annually to raise funds for the institute and create awareness, so that people from the community as well as surrounding areas such as Meyerton and Henley on Klip can get to know more about the institute and the work it does.
The Känguru Institute for the Disabled is an independent non-profit, organization based in Garthview, Kliprivier, South of Alberton.
The centre is a residential home for severely disabled children and provides care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Participants could choose between various distances, which included 3km, 5km and 9km fun runs.
Jacob, the Highveld Horse Care Unit’s new mascot since February, made a special appearance at the fun run and completely stole the show.
According to Highveld Horse Care Unit’s Johan Strydom, Jacob is a very shy horse who is a bit nervous around people. Johan decided to take her to the fun run/walk so that she could socialise a bit.
This was the percheron stallion’s first outing and she managed to put a smile on quite a few faces.
