Midvaal introduces ban on open fires

The Midvaal Local Municipality has introduced a ban on open fires in light of prevailing hazardous weather conditions and high fire threat.

MEYERTON. – The municipality warned in a statement that non-compliance may lead to legal action.

“The Midvaal area is predicted to experience a high fire index for the upcoming four days, indicating a significant risk of wildfires. Midvaal has very limited resources and it is imperative that residents take collective responsibility to prevent any fire-related incidents that could endanger lives, property, and our environment,” the municipality said in a statement.

The ban comes after a week of which saw many hectares of farming land burned to the ground and animals killed in fires.

The municipality said in the statement that recreational fires such as those for braais should be conducted in a safe and controlled environment.

“People must ensure that the fire is completely extinguished before leaving an area. We strongly advise against making fires in open areas, particularly given the high risk for the next four days. Our resources are limited, and it is our collective duty to prevent fire related emergencies.”

“We urge residents to work with the municipality to safeguard our community, environment, and resources,” said the Midvaal Local Municipality in a statement.
