Free rabies vaccination for pets

While all of the other viral infections can cause your animal serious harm or even be fatal, rabies poses the risk of human exposure.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that causes damage to the brain and spinal cord in infected animals and humans.

Almost all cases of rabies in humans were transmitted from domestic dog or cat bites. Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear.

This year will mark the 17th International World Rabies Day. A day specially dedicated to the cause of elimination of rabies as a disease in humans by 2030.

Two local veterinary clinics are once again offering a free rabies vaccination to all dogs and cats on 30 September at Vaal Animal Clinic (52 Carter Street) where yearly vaccinations can also be done a at discount price of R150, and Driehoek Animal Hospital (142 Piet Retief Boulevard) from 09:00 to 15:00.

While there are several diseases that your veterinarian will vaccinate your pet against, the most important one is against rabies.

In case of a rabies outbreak, this virus will be fatal to many humans and animals.

By choosing to have your pet vaccinated, you choose to help in the fight against the fatal disease known as rabies. You are protecting your beloved pet, your family and your community from contracting or spreading this horrific virus.

As part of this initiative, we as the veterinary profession stand in the front lines of this mission. Rabies can and will be eliminated if we vaccinate all our domestic dogs and cats.
