Shots fired at security guard

VEREENIGING. - As we approach the festive season all residents should keep in mind the potential increase in criminal activity. A recent incident in the Vaal serves as a stark reminder of the heightened risks during this period.

According to Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communications for Fidelity ADT, the incident happened on 5 October at approximately 04:39.

Fidelity ADT Reaction Officer Joseph Lehohla arrived on the premises to find no guard at the gate to open for him.

As he was checking the premises from outside, he heard someone from the guard room screaming. Moments later two suspects were seen fleeing the scene towards the eastern direction of the premises.

Fidelity ADT Reaction Officer Lehohla pursued the suspects, who fired shots toward him from different directions. The suspects managed to escape despite returning fire and discharging 14 rounds.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that two security guards from another security company were tied up by the suspects.

One suspect held them hostage while others were busy drilling a hole in the wall of the safe room. The suspects gained access to the safe room and managed to open one safe. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

Fortunately, some of the stolen items including computer boxes, computer screens and a drilling machine were recovered.

One of the suspect’s firearm magazine was also confiscated. The scene was handed over to Warrant Officer Steyn from Vereeniging SAPS for further investigation.

Fidelity ADT urges all residents to remain vigilant as we approach the festive season. Ensure that your security systems are functioning correctly and report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agencies immediately.
