Police engage farmers on stock theft

The police reached out to farmers and residents in the rural areas of Meyerton to raise awareness about stock theft.

MEYERTON. – On Tuesday, November 21, members of Meyerton Rural Safety, Social Crime Prevention  and the Crime Prevention Wardens embarked on a Crime Awareness Campaign and visited farms and residential areas in the Meyerton policing area.

The campaign was aimed at creating maximum awareness on stock theft.

Farmers were encouraged to brand their stock for identification purposes and not to buy stolen livestock.

The SAPS members also urged farmers to report stock theft cases to the police station.

Tips on avoiding stock theft:

*Implement and maintain a livestock register;

*Report all stock theft incidents immediately to the nearest Police Station;

*Brand mark your livestock according to the Animal Identification Act (many cases are lost in courts because of disputes regarding proper identification of animals);

*Report stray animals to the Police immediately;

*Cooperate and work together with the local SAPS and Stock Theft Units.
