Young Innovators: Vaal learners excel in Robotics Championship

Our local team received invitations to compete in the Open Africa Championship (OAC) as well as the Western Edge Open in California!

VEREENIGING. – A group of talented learners from Fundamental Faculty in Three Rivers have made waves in the world of educational robotics, proving that young minds can achieve extraordinary things. The LEGO Tronic team, composed of Grade 5-6 learners, has captured attention with their remarkable performance at the South African FIRST LEGO League championship.

At the Sci-Bono championship, the team stood out among 62 competing teams, securing an impressive 9th place overall in a season that featured over 400 teams across 17 regional events. Their most notable achievement came in the Core Values category, where they won 3rd place, highlighting their exceptional teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The team’s success has not gone unnoticed. They received invitations to two prestigious competitions: the Western Edge Open in California and the Open Africa Championship (OAC) in Cape Town. After careful consideration, the learners chose to focus on the OAC, demonstrating a strategic approach to their competitive journey.

Showing true entrepreneurial spirit, the LEGO Tronic team launched a “back-a-buddy” fundraising campaign to support their championship participation. This initiative not only helps cover competition expenses but also teaches valuable lessons in community engagement and resource management.
Their journey is more than just a competition success story. It represents the power of early technological education and collaborative learning. These young innovators are proving that with dedication, teamwork, and creativity, learners can make significant strides in the world of technology and robotics.

The LEGO Tronic team serves as an inspiring example of how structured technological challenges can nurture young talent, developing critical skills in robotics, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
