Why winding down is key to a fresh start this festive season
Unwind this festive season to reduce stress, reflect, and prepare for a motivated and successful year ahead.
Taking time to unwind over the festive season is more than just a luxury; it’s a necessity.
According to psychologist Dr. Bongani Springbok, founder of the Making a Difference Agency in Tzaneen, this period offers an essential opportunity for reflection and preparation.
“Winding down during the festive season is important for our well-being and helps reduce stress. With a clear mind, one can set realistic expectations, reconnect with loved ones, and plan ahead effectively,” she explains.
Dr. Springbok highlights how this downtime fosters clarity and increased motivation for the upcoming year. It also provides the perfect moment to establish SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) resolutions, paving the way for meaningful and achievable goals.
For professionals, the festive season serves as a critical reset.
“It helps the working class prioritise workloads, manage expectations, and establish a smooth handover to colleagues. This sets clear boundaries during their absence and ensures a less stressful return to work,” Dr. Springbok notes.
Students, too, can benefit from taking a break.
“Relaxing by engaging in activities they love, whether spending time with friends or exploring hobbies, helps students recharge and prepare for the challenges of the new academic year,” she adds.
While unwinding is vital, Dr. Springbok warns against the risks of overindulgence, particularly overspending during the excitement of the festive season.
“This can have dire consequences that often become apparent in January when the festive buzz has faded,” she cautions.
By approaching the festive season with balance, mindfulness, and intention, individuals can set the tone for a fulfilling and successful year ahead.
