Successful 9-hour rescue mission
After a surprise visit to a Cape Town suburb, a wayward elephant seal was carefully released back into the wild.
The southern elephant seal that took a tour in a residential area in Gordon’s Bay yesterday has been returned to the ocean.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA monitored his welfare since he was first seen in the coastal town, including during sedation by a wildlife veterinarian, and the process of loading the animal into the City of Cape Town’s large game capture trailer.
By late afternoon, he was transported to Koggel Bay, where his recovery from sedation was monitored before the SPCA’s team left the site.
The entire operation took about nine hours.
