Be prepared on the road when temperatures drop

As South Africa is about to hit middle winter, and freezing temperatures are expected on Friday in the Vaal and the rest of the country, it is important to be prepared for these road conditions.

Dewald Ranft, MIWA National Chairman, says freezing weather conditions can make driving extremely hazardous.  “We urge motorists to adapt their driving to suit these dangerous conditions.”

Safety tips for winter:

• Slow down: Drive at a reduced speed to allow for longer braking distances on slippery roads.

• Increase tollowing distance: Allow plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front to give yourself time to react.

• Use headlights: Keep headlights on low beam to improve visibility in mist, fog, and snow.

• Stay aert for fallen trees or debris: Be vigilant and prepared to stop or swerve safely if necessary.

• Avoid sudden movements: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly to avoid skidding.

• Keep your car well-maintained: Ensure that your tyres, brakes, lights, and wipers are in good working order.

“In such extreme conditions, it’s often safer to postpone your journey if possible,” adds Ranft.

“If you do need to drive, plan your route carefully, allow extra travel time, and make sure your mobile phone is fully charged in case of emergency.”

Additional precautions:

• Check weather and traffic updates before setting out.

• Pack an emergency kit, including essential items such as a blanket, water, snacks, a torch.

• Try to keep your fuel tank at least half full to avoid running out in case of delays or detours.

• Before driving, remove all snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, lights, and roof to ensure maximum visibility and prevent hazards for other road users.
