Sasol showcases sustainable fuels innovation

A tour of the facilities highlighted the company’s research, innovation and scale-up capabilities and the role advanced research can play in enabling the development of sustainable fuels.

SASOLBURG – Sasol welcomed international clean energy researchers, industry leaders and experts to its Research and Technology (R&T) facilities as part of the 8th Research and Development 20 (RD20) Conference for Clean Energy Technologies.

The conference took place from 19 to 23 October 2026 at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria under the theme “Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation: From Africa to the World”.

Launched in 2019, RD20 is a global research and development initiative bringing together leading research institutes from G20 countries and regions.

Its objective is to strengthen international collaboration and accelerate innovation in clean energy technologies in support of the transition towards carbon neutrality.

As part of the conference programme, delegates could participate in technical site visits hosted by Sasol and Eskom on Friday October 23.

The visits were intended to provide firsthand exposure to research, innovation and technology development facilities while enabling delegates to engage with experts and explore technologies supporting clean energy, sustainability and industrial decarbonisation.

During the visit to Sasol’s R&T campus in Sasolburg, delegates learnt more about Sasol’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development journey based on Fischer-Tropsch technology.

The programme provided insight into the end-to-end technology development pathway, from laboratory research through pilot-plant testing to semi-commercial-scale demonstration.

According to Andy Msiza, Senior Vice President of R&T, Sasol is fully aware of the value that can be derived from sharing research activities, experiences and best practices.

“For Sasol, hosting delegates at our R&T facilities in Sasolburg provides an opportunity to demonstrate work underpinning our sustainable fuels journey and to contribute to international knowledge-sharing on technologies supporting the global energy transition,” he said.
