Never underestimate the power of the Vaal River
The recent drowning of three men from Potchefstroom in the Vaal River during a baptism ceremony in Parys has highlighted the critical need for safety awareness, especially as the Festive Season approaches.

Adding to the danger, heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding.
With eight sluice gates opened this week, the Vaal River’s water level is expected to rise substantially and rapidly.
The river is currently in flood and highly unpredictable. Authorities strongly advise the public to stay out of the water.
During flood conditions, the river poses extreme danger, particularly to those unfamiliar with its currents or lacking proper training.
Safety rules:
Respect the water: Never underestimate the river’s power, especially during a flood.
Obey all warnings: Heed signs and warnings near rivers, lakes, and pools.
Avoid the edges: Do not walk or stand near the banks of a flooded river or dam.
Alcohol and water do not mix: Never combine swimming or river activity with alcohol consumption.
Call, don’t rescue: If someone is in distress and you are not trained in lifesaving, call for help immediately. Do not attempt a rescue.
Inflatables are dangerous: Tubes and air mattresses create a false sense of security and can be swept away instantly by strong currents.
Supervise children: The most dangerous time during an outing is upon arrival. Always supervise children closely, as they may wander off while adults are unpacking.
Know your emergency contacts: Be prepared to call for help quickly if needed.
