75th Vaal Canoe Marathon
Doubling as the official South African K2 River Championships, this iconic race will once again bring together the nation's top paddlers for a high-stakes challenge.
PARYS – The ADG Vaal River Canoe Marathon, a cornerstone of South Africa’s paddling history, is set to celebrate its milestone 75th edition on December 6.
The marathon covers the full 42km route, starting at the Vaal Dam Wall and finishing at the scenic Umfula Lodge.
For newcomers and those looking for a shorter introduction to river racing, there is a 22km option that offers a strong finish at the Likkewaan Canoe Club just outside Parys.
The Vaal River Canoe Marathon has crowned legends for over seven decades, and this year’s competition is fierce.
Clint Cook, the reigning champion for the past three years, has partnered with national marathon paddler Wayne Jacobs.
This formidable blend of skill and experience will face stiff competition from determined up-and-coming crews from KwaZulu-Natal, though the locals’ river knowledge may prove decisive.
Update
The race was originally scheduled as a two-day event on November 23 and 24.
However, the Organising Committee made the call to postpone the event after the opening of eight sluice gates resulted in rising water levels and the river flowing a little too enthusiastically.
The new race day is now set for December 6.
Spectators are welcome to be part of the excitement! Come enjoy a day filled with fun and camaraderie at the finish line, Umfula Lodge.
