LENASIA – The local cycling community continues to grapple with the loss of two cyclists who died in a collision along the R82 (Old Johannesburg Road) near Walkerville on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as 49-year-old Jayesh Madhav and 52-year-old Atish Raman Jeevan, both members of the Lenasia cycling community.

Friends and fellow cyclists described the incident as a devastating blow.

Funeral arrangements have been confirmed: Atish Raman Jeevan’s service will be held at 14:00 on Monday, February 2, at the Lenasia Hindu Crematorium.

Jayesh Madhav’s funeral will depart from 39 Willow Street, Extension 3, Lenasia, on Tuesday, February 3, at 11:00, proceeding to the same crematorium.

The crash occurred just days before the South African National Road and Time Trial Championships, set to take place in Midvaal from 5 to 8 February 2026, sending shockwaves through the cycling community ahead of the major event.

Tributes have poured in from local organizations, including the Lenasia Community Police Forum and the Lenasia Table Tennis Association, both expressing condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

Police confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing. Authorities have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Renewed calls have also emerged for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, particularly measures aimed at preventing reckless and impaired driving.
