BREAKING: Fatal crash on R59 South at Johan le Roux
Chaos on the R59: multiple dead, dozens injured in Meyerton crash.
UPDATE: Shooting precedes deadly R59 crash near Meyerton
What was initially reported as a fatal crash on the R59 near the Johan le Roux off-ramp now appears to have followed a shooting incident, according to multiple sources.
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee reported that at approximately 14:44, occupants of a white Nissan Juke allegedly opened fire on a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 22-seater travelling on the R59, just off the Johan le Roux off-ramp near Meyerton.
According to the information shared, the Sprinter subsequently collided with the Nissan, after which three armed suspects fled the scene on foot.
They allegedly hijacked another vehicle and fled in the direction of Johannesburg.
Abramjee further reported that five people were killed and at least 18 others injured, with several victims sustaining gunshot wounds.
In a later update, he indicated that two suspects had been arrested, although the motive for the attack remains unclear.
A local source at the scene told Vaalweekblad that occupants of the Nissan Juke began firing at the bus, and that shots were allegedly returned before both vehicles lost control and crashed.
The same source said 24 people were involved, with six fatalities reported and 18 people transported to hospital.
Police later located the hijacked vehicle with blood found inside, and a manhunt for additional suspects is under way.
At the time of publication, SAPS had not yet issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the exact number of casualties.
This is a developing story.
