VANDERBIJLPARK. – A proactive initiative aimed at addressing the challenges faced by communities in the battle against crime took an unexpected turn on Sunday during Operation Wanya Tsotsi in the Marikana informal settlement in Bophelong, Gauteng.

This operation sought to enhance community engagement, forge partnerships with local structures, and mobilise residents to collectively combat crime.

Unfortunately, the event was marred by an outbreak of violence. As MEC Faith Mazibuko, the Gauteng Community Safety MEC, arrived in various parts of Marikana alongside other municipal officials, they were met with hostility as community members began hurling stones at her entourage.

This shocking incident left both bystanders and officials bewildered, especially considering their gathering’s purpose was to engage in a meaningful dialogue about enhancing safety and security in the area.

Local authorities had been diligently working to address the pressing concerns related to crime, but this violent outburst threatened to undermine their efforts.

In response to the incident, MEC Mazibuko emphasised the importance of their visit and the necessity of conducting visible policing programs in the area due to residents’ concerns about safety.

She mentioned that they had visited the same area just the previous week to address these crime-related challenges and would continue to do so as long as people did not feel safe.

MEC Mazibuko also discussed the upgrading of the satellite police station in Bophelong into a fullyfledged precinct, highlighting the need for such improvements due to the growing population.

Regarding the stoning incident, Public Safety MMC Ndade Mokoena noted that this was not the first time such attacks had occurred in the area, citing a previous instance during Operation Shanela.

He expressed that the community had, unfortunately, become accustomed to such events.

Vanderbijlpark Visible Policing Commander Colonel and Acting Station Commander Van Wyk expressed disappointment at the community’s reaction, emphasising that Operation Wanya Tsotsi was initiated to help residents feel safer.

The violent response from the community was disheartening, considering the operation’s purpose was to enhance their security and well-being.
