“We want to thank the schools that came to support this initiative, especially the schools’ principals for allowing their learners to come."

SHARPEVILLE.- Eligwa Swimming Club in conjunction with Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Sports Department hosted a Swimming Gala for the primary and secondary schools.

This first-of-its-kind swimming competition took place at Sharpeville Swimming Pool on Saturday. First, it was for the primary schools last week Saturday, and over the weekend the secondary schools battled for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Some of the learners who shone on the day include Thato Mashobane from Mohloli Secondary School, Palesa Makulubane from Hoerskool Vanderbilpark, Palesa Typile from Pele Ya Pele Secondary School, Katleho Motepe from Lekoa Shandu Secondary School and twin sisters Itumeleng and Boitumelo Motaung from Lekoa Shandu Secondary School were among other learners who went home with gold and silver medals.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Tshepo Koatla from Eligwa Swimming Club hailed this event as a great success. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the purpose of this swimming gala was to introduce swimming at the school level. Koatla said swimming is part of school sports and the aim is to see all the schools participating in swimming.

“We want to thank the schools that came to support this initiative, especially the schools’ principals for allowing their learners to come. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Sports Department for always supporting initiatives like this. We are more than grateful for their support and not forgetting the parents who also came to support their children,” said Koatla.

Meanwhile, Koatla revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that they intend to host this event annually.
