Uncle (44) arrested for allegedly raping niece and friend

A man is expected to appear in the Oranjeville Magistrate's Court soon to face two charges of rape.

A 44-year-old man from Metsimaholo in the Free State has been arrested after he reportedly took two innocent children to a field, and raped them.

It is alleged that on Saturday at about 11:30, the 37-year-old aunt noticed a change in her niece’s walking movement and when she called her to check on her, she realised she might have been raped.

Oranjeville police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli says: “The aunt’s investigation revealed that her niece was raped on April 7. [It is said] the malume (uncle) took the 10-year-old and her nine-year-old friend to an open field away from the houses, where he raped them and gave them money and threatened them not to tell anyone about the incident.”

Kareli adds the aunt took both children to Oranjeville Police Station. “They were taken to hospital for medical attention,” he adds.

Kareli says a manhunt was launched and a 44-year-old suspect was arrested after he was found at his house.

“He will appear in the Oranjeville Magistrate’s Court soon for two counts of rape, [and the] investigation continues,” he concludes.
