VANDERBIJLPARK – Development was the order of the day when Sedibeng hosted the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Cross Country Championships at Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday.

This event, the first of its kind to be held in Sedibeng, was hosted by ASA in conjunction with Athletics Vaal Triangle.
It was one of the biggest events on the running calendar, with athletes from all over the country attending in large numbers.
The day’s programme started with the development race for U8 boys and girls. This was an overwhelming moment for some of these upcoming athletes, with their parents and coaches cheering them to the finishing line.

Norman Dlomo, a notable figure with ASA, confirmed it was a great day of development as he was almost overwhelmed by the talent on display. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport: “This truly is athletics. Seeing these young athletes showcase their talent with hugs and kisses at the end of the race by proud mothers and fathers who appreciate their children’s effort regardless of their finishing position. It was all about fun, not winning.”
“This is what we want to see, because this is the considering age to start a developing team. What we saw today must be sustained for the better future of these young athletes,” said Dlomo.
The event also saw junior men and women, senior men and women together with the over 35+, as well as over 60+ men and women participate. Athletes came as far as KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and North West to compete at the championships.
Meanwhile, the Vaal River City Marathon is scheduled to take place at the same venue, Isak Steyl Stadium, this coming Sunday (15 September).
