Riviera on Vaal Parkrun remains closed amid sewage concerns

Riviera on Vaal Parkrun remains shut as sewage threat still lingers.

VEREENIGING – Despite visible improvements along the route, the Riviera on Vaal parkrun remains suspended due to ongoing safety concerns linked to raw sewage contamination.

The organisers took to Facebook late this week to update the community:

“Dear parkrunners, even though the situation of the sewage water on our route is looking much better, it is still not safe to open the parkrun. We are still cancelled for 14 June. We hope to return with better news next week. Keep warm and stay safe.”

While there has been an improvement, the footpath is still flooded with raw sewage.

The popular Saturday morning event was first cancelled in May following reports of raw sewage flowing onto the path — a situation that drew public frustration and concern.

While municipal efforts have reportedly led to improvements, organisers are erring on the side of caution.

Regulars have expressed disappointment but support the decision, and many are hopeful that the parkrun will resume soon.

The parkrun team continues to monitor the site closely and hopes to welcome runners back in the near future.
