DA to hold oversight visit at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

DA to inspect Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, aiming to unlock its R2b tourism potential.

SEDIBENG – The DA caucus in the Sedibeng District Municipality will conduct an oversight visit to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve on September 19.

The visit is aimed at assessing the current challenges facing the reserve and exploring ways to unlock its tourism and economic potential.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, located off the N3 highway near Heidelberg, is regarded as one of the district’s key natural assets, with a tourism potential estimated at over R2b.

However, according to the DA, persistent neglect and mismanagement have left the reserve underutilised, preventing it from contributing fully to the local economy and communities.

Broken windows and overgrown grounds highlight years of neglect.

The oversight visit is expected to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the reserve’s operational challenges.

The DA caucus plans to gather factual insights, engage with stakeholders, and identify actionable solutions to enhance visitor experiences and boost the reserve’s business potential.

DA caucus leader Sibusiso Dyonase said the visit underscores the party’s commitment to ensuring that Suikerbosrand fulfills its promise as a premier tourist destination and a sustainable economic driver for the Sedibeng District.

“Your expertise and perspective are highly valued as we work collaboratively to revive the reserve’s operations,” Dyonase said. The visit will begin at 09:00, with attendees asked to arrive at 08:30 at the reserve’s main entrance on R550 Kliprivier Road.

Participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes suitable for hiking and a hat for sun protection, as the programme involves walking and exploration of the reserve’s terrain.

The DA encourages stakeholders and experts to participate actively in the visit, to develop concrete strategies to revitalise the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve for both tourism and local economic benefit.
