Three suspects connected to crime syndicate arrested in Vereeniging
Vereeniging police have dismantled a violent crime syndicate believed to be behind more than 40 serious offences.
VEREENIGING -A violent crime spree that gripped the Vereeniging area has come to an end following the arrest of three suspects, said to be connected to a Vereeniging crime syndicate.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela confirmed that the breakthrough followed months of extensive investigations and a coordinated manhunt
According to Maxambela, the syndicate is linked to more than 40 serious crimes committed in the Mario Milani Drive area since March, including armed robbery, assault, kidnapping, rape, and murder.
“The severity of these offences made the group a top priority for the Vereeniging Police and key security partners.”
Police members worked tirelessly alongside Sekuriteit Sonder Grense, Midvaal Peace Officers, and Community Policing Forum (CPF) members in intelligence-driven operations involving undercover operations and drone surveillance.
In the early hours of October 23, police received a crucial tip-off that led to a high-speed chase. Multiple specialised units, including Sedibeng Infrastructure C-Relief, Vereeniging Police, Sedibeng Flying Squad, and Sekuriteit Sonder Grense, were mobilised.
During the operation, two suspects were arrested, and various stolen items were recovered at the scene, including cash, cellphones, and clothing positively identified by victims of previous crimes.
Information obtained from the arrests led to the swift apprehension of a third suspect later that morning. The suspects face charges of robbery with a firearm and rape, with additional charges expected as investigations continue.
“This breakthrough marks significant success in the fight against organised crime in the Sedibeng District and brings much-needed relief and justice to the victims and the community of Vereeniging,” Maxambela said.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon.
