SHARPEVILLE.- The Lekoa Athletics Club will once again host its annual 5km Constitutional Signing 5km Fun Run at the George Thabe Stadium on December 14.
This annual fun run is in commemoration of the historical signing of the country’s constitution in Sharpeville on December 10, 1996, by Nelson Mandela.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sandile Ncala, who is behind this initiative, said this fun run is to remind those who forgot that the country’s constitution was signed in Sharpeville on the above-mentioned date and year.
He told Sedibeng Ster Sport this was the most significant day on the political calendar. Apart from the signing of the country’s constitution, Sharpeville made international headlines when police opened fire on a crowd of people who had assembled outside the police station protesting against the pass law. It happened on March 21, 1960.
Back to the fun run, Ncala said it is important to revisit the township’s history to educate the current generation about what happened in the past.
“As Lekoa Athletics Club, we think it is important to remind our people about events regarding the history of our country. However, people must also note that this township has a rich history when it comes to sports, especially boxing and football. We will continue to share our history with this generation and the coming generation,” said Ncala.
